Finished Trailer and Ancillary texts

With all of my media products, I reacted to all the feedback given to me by my target audience. I believe that my audience know what will improve and make them better so this is why I shall be improving them.

With my trailer, I was told by my audience to add sounds effects at the certain moments of the trailer, this was when the draw was opening to get the knife out, when Scott sends and receives the messages and finally at the beginning when one of the bullies punch Nathan in the face. I believe that these sound effects will make my trailer seem more realistic meaning my audience will be able to relate to what is going on. I also got told to add another song, a calmer song. The calmer song at the beginning allows the mood to change as the tension rises, this tells the audience that something bad will be happening.

On my Magazine Front Cover, I got told to change the background image as they were all the same for all of my media products. Having it different allows the audience to see somewhere else that my film is going to be set. I also made sure that all the text in the middle of the page was centred, this made it look more professional.
For my DVD Cover, I was also told to change the background imagine for the same reason as the magazine cover. I have also moved the name of the film down to the bottom, this was because I thought there was to much of a gap, now I have moved it, I think that it looks much better and you can now see more of the picture allowing the audience to see more of the physical stance, this tells everyone that he is aggressive and is ready to get the bullies back for what they have been doing.

The only things that I have changed on my Billboard is the background image, this is also for the same reason as my other media products. I also moved the star rating into the middle allowing the top to look more symmetrical.

Other improvements
  • Text added to the Final Pitch Analysis
  • First Stage of Filming

Evaluation Question 4: How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stage?

Evaluation Question 3: What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Film and Production Feedback
In the development of both my Production logo and Film logo, I asked my target audience ,who were between the ages of 15-25, what they thought of the logos. They gave me both good and bad things about them. With the good things given, I developed on the ideas to make them better. For example, Dan said that the colour of the blood was good and that it gave my film logo seem like it was from a horror film, to make it look like more of a horror film and to make it stand out, I decided to use the colour of the blood for the Hashtag, this would make it stand out from the rest of the text allowing people to see that the film has a social networking side of it. I also got told that the computer was a bad idea and that he didn't really see the point, this made me remove the computer to just have the word 'SL#TAG'. This ended up becoming much more affective as it is a catchy name and also looks better than the original idea, it also came across as being a much more affective horror logo as having a computer in the background made it look childish and more of a gaming film and not a slasher horror. The Production logo was very successful within my target audeince, they found it very eye catching, it was also clear to them and they also found it very simple which is what I was looking to do. Helen, who was one of my target audience, found that the font was exactly the right size for people with bad eyeslight which is good as they will be able to read it easily.

Plot Feedback
I interview Emily about my plot who is 17 and is part of my target audience. Emily found that the film was very unexpected, by this she meant that you never would have guessed that at the beginning of the film, Nathan would have been the masked character and would end up killing all of bullies. She also found that the film was very secretive, none of the bullies had any suspicion that the masked character was Nathan. However, Emily also had something bad about the plot which she didn't enjoy. She found that having a murder scene in the school wouldn't be very effective. I then acted on this and decided against putting this in my trailer. This helped me as it would have been very hard to film what I had initially written in my plot.

Ancillary Text Feedback
I found the feedback from my ancillary texts very useful. Most of the people asked didn't that I had used the same picture on all of my products, I decided to change all of my pictures to completely different and new pictures, I now feel that they give a better affect to my products as you actually see some of the places during my trailer. Even the smallest of feedback can help, Angus suggested that having the star rating in the middle of the page, on my Billboard, would make it look more symmetrical, I acted upon his suggestion and it made it look better than originally. Luke told me that on the DVD Cover he didn't like that 'Bullies Get Bullied' down the right of the page, I decided to put it above my Film Logo which I also moved to the middle of the page as this is also something that was mentioned by Luke. This lead to me moving the names of the actors to the top of the page which is something Luke and Hannah told me would look better.

Trailer Feedback

Of the people that said no, most of them suggested that the film needed more sound effects to make it feel more realistic, for example, when the draw is opening to get the knife out. I also got told that the intertitles didn't look very good and they would look better if the text was moving. Most of the the people who watched the trailer told me how they didn't like how there was only one song playing through the whole trailer and suggested that I had a calmer and slower paced tune at the beginning so that when the clips starts to get more dramatic, the must will also.

I have learnt that getting feedback from your target audience is very useful. Everything they said helped me rather develop on the ideas I already had or to improve my products as they thought something would look better in a different place or not having it at all.

Evaluation Question 2: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

The question for my evaluation was how effective is the combination of the trailer and print products, as part of my media coursework I had constructed a theatrical trailer, a DVD cover, billboard and magazine front cover. All these products use the same house style using a burgundy red and black. The reason I have used these colours throughout my print products is to ensure that my target audience will always recognise my film by the colours, the burgundy stands out on the black well, the use of black creates a dramatic feel, it gives a sense of death and mystery. The Burgundy is used to represent the colour of blood, its used in a way to suggest there will be violence and blood meaning there will be murder.

The combination of my trailer, my billboard, my magazine cover and DVD cover sells and advertises the film to its full potential as they all work alongside each other. The products are all linked by characters, with Masked Nathan featured on the magazine cover and the main characters in the poster, as well as the characters all featured in the trailer. Promotional material is often done like this as the characters are the main focus of the brand and audience members can relate to certain characters.

The background of my front cover is at the school which the film is set in; I have used this as my target audience are mainly people who attend school/uni. At the beginning of my trailer, you see the setting of the school and in the corridor of Nathan being beaten up against the lockers, this is where this picture is taken, I have done this as it's a point in Nathans life where he realised that things needed to change. This makes the film more relatable to the target audience as they are able to relate back to when they were back at school and possible when they were bullied and took action against it. The main character of the film is the masked character, Nathan. I have used him on the front cover of my magazine so people know what and who he is. Using the Masked Nathan gives the film a sense of mystery allowing people to try and work out who he is before they see the trailer to finally find out who he is. This would give people an insider of what the film is going to be like, it will tell them that a masked character is going to be in it. This is also a good combination as it will tell people that there is going to be a masked figure in the film but not why he is wearing the mask, in which you will then find out in the trailer who and why he has a mask on. Sticking to the house style is important yet also very effective, having Masked Nathan wear a black hoodie once again creates a dramatic feel which is also giving a sense of mystery and death which I stated earlier, this brings a clear link to all of my products as I have tried to make everything as dark as possible suggesting the mystery of the film.

Something else that gives a clear link between my print products and my trailer are the locations and uses of all the images. Most of the images used in my print products are seen within the trailer itself, especially the backgrounds. On the DVD Cover, I have Nathan with a weapon which he uses in the film, an axe. This gives the film a sense of action, that there's going to be fighting. during the film, we also see someone getting a knife out of a draw. We then see on the back of the DVD Cover, a knife in the Burgundy colour, Having this colour tells us that the knife is going to be used to kill one of the victims the masked character giving the film a sense of gore. This will be very effective throughout all of my print products allowing the audience to understand what may happen before they watch the trailer or film.

Another combination of all the products I used is the type of shots in my ancillary text and my trailer this because in the ancillary text in most of the products such as the billboard, DVD cover and magazine front, I used a mid-shot for masked Nathan. This is because I want the audience to become as familiar as possible with this character as he is the main and most important character in the film. This is effective combination as that it allows the audience to understand what type of characters that he could be before even watching the trailer or the film.

On the front cover of the DVD Cover, I have ‘Bullies Get Bullied’ on it, this has a good link to my trailer, this is the slogan of the film. During the beginning of the trailer, I have a voice over of Nathan speaking in which he says the slogan, this tells us how Nathan has been affected by the bullying which can then be linked back to the rest of my ancillary texts. I want people to remember the slogan,

Ancillary Texts- with feedback from target audience

Feedback
After speaking and showing my target audience these 'final' print products, I found that they didnt like a lot of things. I found that most of the people I asked didn't like the picture used, they also said that I shouldn't use the same background on all of them as they would like to see more of where the film is set. Angus said that on the Billboard, the star rating would look better in the middle so "the top would look more symmetrical". On the DVD Cover, they all liked the back of it apart from that the information box was white, they thought it standed out to much. Most of the people asked disliked the front. Luke said that he didn't like how the 'Bullies Get Bullied' down the side and how it had a white background to it. Luke also said that he didn't like how the actors names were in the middle and how the film name was at the top, this was also said by Hannah.

DVD Cover

I found designing the DVD cover a lot harder than making both the magazine front cover and billboard. Having the title large on the front of the cover draws peoples eyes to it, I have also added blood dripping down from below the title as this will show the audience that it is slightly goory and has blood in it. Having the dark background tells the audince its also a sinister film, it also helps bring out the picture of Nathan in the mask show the audience he is the main character and also the main feature in the film. On the back of the DVD cover, I have used the picture of the school as the background, this tells the audience where the film is partly set and what age group the characters are in. As there are two main characters, I have had to include the second main character, Scott. He is on his phone showing the social media side of the film.

Possible Final Trailer/feedback

Of the people that said no, most of them suggested that the film needed more sound effects to make it feel more realistic, for example, when the draw is opening to get the knife out. I also got told that the intertitles didn't look very good and they would look better if the text was moving. Most of the the people who watched the trailer told me how they didn't like how there was only one song playing through the whole trailer and suggested that I had a calmer and slower paced tune at the beginning so that when the clips starts to get more dramatic, the must will also.

First Trailer Draft

This is the first draft for my film trailer. I think that this can be improved a lot to make it better. It will be more affective if I add music to the background of it and it will make it more dramatic. It also isn't long enough meaning I need to record a lot more clips in order to make it a a good length trailer. I also feel that the intertitles can be improved to make it better for my target audience.

Magazine Front Cover- final

Compared to my first drafts of the front cover, I believe that I have made good improvements that makes my magazine cover look a lot more professional and worthy of being on the shelves of a shop.
The strongest points to my magazine would be would be the all the larger font in the middle which includes the film name, the main actor in the film and the slogan to the film. Having it all large draws your eyes to it which is what I want as I want people to know what the film is called and who the main actor of the film is, also having the five stars in gold gives people the suggestion that film is a good film even if they don' know what it's about, this all helps with the visual syntax. I have stuck with having white and the red coloured font, keeping this all the way through the my media products will make them seem more professional and people will recognise my colour scheme. I also believe that my film name is very unique meaning when people see it they will recognise it.

First Front Cover Draft

This is the first draft to my front cover, I feel that the best parts to it is the madhead and slogan. I find that is has a good layout and would help with the visual synthax once I get everything else on the cover looking right. The coverlines are also good but to make them look better, they need a lot of changing around to make it look more professional. The picture is a good picture to use but the colour of the hoodie isn't completely black which doesnt give it as much as a sinister look. I also haven't cropped out the arm properly, its to thin and doesnt look like his arm, so to improve it, I will redo it to make it look better. I also think that there isnt much on the page, there isnt much there that people are going to be intersted in, it doesn't look professional.

More Possible Trailer Music

These are different songs and tunes that I may use for my trailer. They could give different feelings to my trailer and different affects.

Location Release

This is a text that someone in my group has produced and sent to a Sutton Park Ranger. We needed to ask for permission to see if we were able to film in the area as it is National Trust property. We have also spoken on the phone about things were are not allowed to do and also go. He said that we had to keep our voiced down so that we don't disturb and wildlife, and we aren't allowed in restricted areas.

Masthead Colour

I have been doing trail and error with the Masthead colours, Trying out different colours is the best way to see what is going to suit the product, I was also adding a drop shadow to each of the Mastheads as this brings it out from the. I find that the Blue doesn't work as it is just to bright for the dark page and the Red at the top is also the same, White, I feel, is the best colour for the Masthead and would look better if i got it matching with the mask colour.

Editing Pictures- Fireworks

I first found that the picture with the background was to bright, so using the brightness and contrast adjust tool, I made the picture right for the background, It took a few attempts to get it right but eventually, I managed to get the contrast and brightness to suit the background colours.

Editing picture- Instagram

These are a few different edits that I have tried, I have used Instagram as a different way to try and edit the pictures in an attempt to get different edits to the pictures, I feel that the edits do not suit the genre and effect that i am looking for so therefore shall not be using the effects.

Conventions of a Film Magazine

The front cover of any magazine is the main focal point for every reader. They are used to draw in their audiences with the combination of image and sell lines. Some of the main codes and conventions that you expect to see on a film magazine front cover are as follows:

·         The type of shot that is used on the front cover of a film magazine are mainly close up’s.
·         Like any magazine, they feature a big, bold, eye catching mast head at the top of the page.

·         Image dominates the page, which is again the case with any magazine front cover that you will see on the shelves.

·         Film magazines tend to use dark, primary colours because they are simple and bold.

·         The names of actors, actresses and famous directors are featured on the front to draw in all kinds of different target audiences.

·         The name of the featured film is always the second largest piece of text, after the mast head, which is on the front cover of the magazine.

·         Graphics and colours are interchangeable, depending on the featured film. For example, if a horror film was being featured on the front covers, the colours would be dark and dull whereas if it was a romantic comedy, colours would change and be brighter and more welcoming.

·         The few sell lines that are actually featured on the front cover of a film magazine indicate the information that they will be able to find inside.

·         Only three/ four colours maximum are used on the front cover to maintain the simplicity of the magazine. An example of this convention is exemplified in the below editions of 'EMPIRE'.
·         Like film posters, props are used to suggest the main genre of the film.

·         Along the top of the front cover, additional information that could determine that the audience will buy this magazine is featured. E.g. free posters, entry into competitions and so on.

Final Pitch Analysis

This is how Representation, Genre and Narrative theorist are related to my film 'SL#TAG'. Me and my group discuss how and why these theories are connected and why they aren't connected to the plot of my film and also how they are connected to my main characaters.

Ancillary Texts

These are 3 different cinema magazines, Entertainment, Empire, Total Film and Premier, these are seen as the  most popular film magazines on the market today. The publishers want their audience to be engaged with whats on the front cover at first sight, to make this possible they use well known actors or odd pictures that look interesting. This is an idea that I will use to draw customers to watch my movie. For horrors, it is important to have something that people will recognise every time they see it, for example, Scream at the bottom right of the pictures. This is what I hope to do with my film having the white mask which is one of the main features of the film SlashTag.

Entertainment
Entertainment Weekly is an American magazine, published by Time Inc, that covers film, television, music, Broadway, theatre, books and popular culture. Different from celebrity-focused publications like US Weekly, People Weekly, and In Touch Weekly, EW primarily concentrates on entertainment media news and critical reviews, and unlike Varity and The Hollywood reporter, which are aimed at industry insiders, EW targets a more general audience.

Empire
Empire is a British film magazine published monthly by Bauer Sonsumer Media, From the first issue in July 1989, the magazine was edited by Barry McIlheney and published by Emap. Bauer purchased Emap Consumer media in early 2008. It is the biggest selling film magazine in the United Kingdom and also published in the United States, Australia, Turkey, Russia and Portugal. Empire organises the annual Empire Awards which were sponsored by Sony Ericsson, and from 2009 sponsored Jameson. The awards are voted for by readers of the magazine.

Total Film
Total Film is a UK-based film magazine published 13 times a year (every four weeks) by Future Publishing. The magazine was launched in 1997 and offers cinema, DVD and Blu-ray news, reviews and features. Total Film is available both in print and interactive iPad editions.

Premiere
Premiere was an American and New York City-based film magazine published by Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S., between 1987 and 2010. The original version of the magazine, Première, was established in France in 1976 and is still being published there.

The company's do this because this is the first thing the audience see. It's the visual syntax. They first look at the image, then he masthead, then the main headline. If somebody was a James Bond fan, they would choose Entertainment over any of the other 4 because of the picture.this is why the magazine company's spend lots of money to get the most famous person they can get on the cover. Another feature that attracts an audience is the colour of the magazine. Magazine company's work very hard to try and get the right colour for the right celebrity. Bullet grey is the perfect colour for James Bond as it matches the films personality. As you can see he shot type for each magazine is very different. Entertainment and Premier have gone for only having one character, this is because the films both follow one person (Iron Man and James Bond). The two other magazines have films that have more than one important character meaning they need more than one person on the cover. A lot of money and research goes into finding out what people look at when buying a magazine

Image of Mask and Knife

This is the picture of the mask that Nathan will be wearing when he goes on a mental rampage. The blood in this picture is obviously not blood but it is just an idea for a magazine cover. The image shows the mask, a phone and a knife, all of which have blood on them. This gives us a mix of the slasher side, horror side and the fact it is based around social media. This picture is taken on an iPad so the picture quality isn't as good as it could be. If we were going to use this image on a magazine front cover, we would make he blood much more realistic, have the whole knife in the picture and the phone screen will be visible and it will show our film logo so it looks good on magazine front covers. The background will also be different. We will change it to grass rather than wood and the lighting will be much darker. This will make it fit the horror genre much better.

Possible Music

This is a list of possible music for my film trailer. All the music is in the Genre R&B and has quite an aggressive tone. The music is associated with target audience. The people we want to come and watch our film will be interested in this type of music. Having this music on our trailer will grab the attention of our target market. The wolf of wall street trailer is a good example of this. There is a kanye West song on that trailer that attracts a teenage audience. As soon as the music comes on teenagers will hear it and focus on the trailer. This is the effect we are going for.

First Stage of Filming

This is the first stage of filming me and my group planned to do. It included the loctaion, who is going to be in it and what camera view it will be. This helped my group as we knew exactly what we were going to do and what order to do it in. This helped when we went to edit and put our clips together as they were all in order of where we wanted to put them.

Example Risk Assessment

New Character

This is Luke Hemming. He will be playing Dom in our film trialer. Dom is one of Scotts friends which makes him a sheep. He follows Scott around everywhere and joins in with all the bullying Scott does. This is another character Nathan will go after in the film. Dom will have a car in the trailer. This is something that we need to add to the prop list as it is used as a weapon in the film

SlashTag- Film Summary

Film Summary:

-   Our film is called SlashTag, The slash section of the name is derived from the fact it’s a slasher horror and it
rhymes with hash. Hash tag relates to social media, this has connection to the social media side to our films title, this is due to how our films plot revolves around the social networking aspect of our film

We called our film this because our film is about a boy called Nathan who becomes a psychopath due to intense bullyimg from his class mates, this eventually leads to him being tipped over the edge resulting in him becoming a slasher murderer. His methods of tormentation is using social networking sites to torment his victims, playing with their minds as he plots to kill them.

The film starts of with a 16-year-old boy called Nathan. Nathan is severely bullied by a 17-year-old boy called Scott and his gang of mates. Nathan hates school and finds it hard to get himself up and into school every day. One night after another day of being beaten up and scarred mentally by his classs mates he discovers social media and its power to watch, stalk and manipulate people.

This is when he realizes he can set up a fake account and torment his bullies online without them knowing who it is. Nathan starts to be very active on social media and starts to take the online harassing very far, by using extreme techniques and manipulation to get to the bullies, Nathan then starts to threaten his bullies with murder.

Nathan steals a white mask from the drama department at school, he uses this as a disguise to take the harassment of his school bullies even further. (This is the stage the audience will stop feeling sorry for Nathan and being scared of him). Nathan then goes after each bully one by one murdering one at a time, using various techniques of torture and death to kill them. Nathan violently kills each bully until he gets to Scott. The main person who has been making his life an utter misery. He makes Scott suffer more than any of the others; this is why he left him until last.

Nathan then realises what he has done and takes his own life. The worry of the consequences of what he had just done was too much for him as he couldn’t cope with the guilt, pressure and his own self after what he had done.

Unfriended Trailer

Trailer above is for the new horror film called unfriended. At the start of the trailer, a girl shoots herself because someone has posted something about her online that she was very embarrassed about. An anonymous account then haunts the people who they think posted the video. The story of unfriended is very similar to the story our film trailer we are creating, both films are a new genre of horror, social media/online horror. We can take a lot from the unfriended trailer as we are doing something very similar. this trailer can help us massively towards our end product.
